Summarize this page with

Compare free device fingerprinting options by the result they provide, the collection method and the allowance that remains after a trial. A self-hosted browser library, an identification API and a fraud-risk API can all have free entry, but they supply different outputs and count different billable events.

Start with the identifier and risk context your application needs. Then calculate the price of the intended deployment, including engineering and investigation work.

  1. 1Check feature access
  2. 2Count billable events
  3. 3Compare total workload
A practical sequence for this guide; it describes an evaluation workflow.

Which options provide a free starting route?

ShieldLabs provides 5,000 free identifications with API access and no card. Fingerprint lists an identification Free plan and a separate Pro Plus trial. Castle provides a monthly API-usage credit that can cover Risk API calls. FingerprintJS is a self-hosted library rather than a hosted identification API.

Comparison of the methods and conditions discussed in this section.
Option Published access Important distinction
ShieldLabs 5,000 free identifications with API access Identification, device/network and risk context in a managed service
Fingerprint Up to 1,000 monthly identification calls; separate Pro Plus trial Confirm ongoing access to the specific Smart Signals; Android allowances differ
Castle 5 US dollars of monthly API usage Equivalent to 1,000 Risk API calls or 5,000 IP lookups at the listed rates
FingerprintJS Self-hosted client-side library Browser identifier without a hosted server-matching service

These are access routes to evaluate, not equal-sized packages. A product demo can expose a feature that is not included in every ongoing free plan.

Separate a trial from an ongoing allowance

A trial can expose paid features for a defined evaluation period. An ongoing free plan has its own output, rate and retention limits. Check both what you can test today and what remains after the trial.

Fingerprint's pricing page separates its Free identification plan from a 14-day Pro Plus trial. Castle's pricing expresses free access as a usage credit, so combining different API types consumes that credit differently.

For any provider, inspect the account's behavior at its limit. Determine whether requests stop, a billing account is required or paid usage continues under the agreed plan. Avoid relying on an unspecified reset period.

Compare paid entry using the actual unit

ShieldLabs lists 99 US dollars per month for 25,000 identifications, with larger monthly plans of 399 for 150,000 and 999 for 500,000. Yearly billing starts at an effective 79 US dollars per month.

Fingerprint lists Pro Plus at 99 US dollars per month for 20,000 API calls, then 4 US dollars per 1,000 additional calls. Castle lists Pro at 200 US dollars per month with 200 US dollars of API usage, equivalent to 40,000 Risk API calls at its published rate.

SEON's Starter is a broader platform plan at 699 US dollars per month for 2,500 fraud checks. Those checks are not automatically interchangeable with a standalone identification call.

Build a workload sheet containing protected routes, expected events per route and the product feature required for each event. Count repeated login and checkout checks according to each provider's billing definition. Monthly visitors alone are not a universal billing unit.

What does self-hosting actually remove?

A self-hosted library removes a hosted identification service fee. Your team still operates collection, storage or matching logic, maintenance and any risk enrichment the application requires.

The current FingerprintJS repository describes client-side fingerprint generation, documents limitations and links its license. Review the license for the version you deploy. A free browser hash does not provide every capability of the commercial hosted product.

If the application needs trusted server results, replay controls, historical investigation or account-risk detection, include that work in a build-versus-buy estimate.

Use a free evaluation to answer a buying question

A useful pilot might ask whether an identifier remains stable after a cookie reset while keeping similar legitimate devices separate. Another might ask whether the server receives the risk fields required for a signup decision.

Keep the same evaluation conditions across candidates. Record the output, missing-data cases, latency and investigation effort. Compare the matching quality and integration requirements alongside the quoted price.

FAQ

Which API is the cheapest?

That depends on the required features and billable workload. Compare identification calls, risk events, monthly users and self-hosting work separately. The smallest headline price does not establish the lowest cost for the same requirement.

Does free IP lookup include device fingerprinting?

Not automatically. An IP lookup evaluates an address, while device collection uses additional evidence. Confirm the specific device product and entitlement with the provider.

Is a public demo a free production plan?

No. A demo shows an output or evaluation path. Production access, limits and commercial terms must be checked independently.
